In a quick binge late at night, I ordered a pack of clay from Amazon. I have never done sculpture before. But after I spent all that time understanding 3D figures to improve my drawing, I figured that the same skill could help in sculpting.
In the past, I created some 3D models using Blender. It uses some of the same skills as clay sculpting, and the process has some similarities. You first start by blocking out the basic shapes, then narrow in and work on the details.
For me, the trickiest part was creating the armature, which I had to make from paper clips. A bunch of the wires ended up sticking out of the figure so I had to cover them up with some weird clay pieces. The final finish is also not very smooth.
The hardest piece was definitely the head. It is the shape that I understand the least, especially in the anime style since what I’m imagining is not really what a head is shaped like. While every other body part, I can just copy what a real body looks like, for the head it is a bigger challenge.
In the end, the sculpting was very satisfying. I enjoy working with my hands to build something in real life, and I find this a lot more fun than 3D modeling on my laptop.
